The Ultimate Guide to Washing Powders

Find Out Which Washing Powders You Need To Use

Both Biological Washing Powders and Non Biological Washing Powders can deliver excellent cleaning results. However, there are a few key differences between them as outlined below.

Temperature

Biological Washing Powders contain enzymes to help remove stains. As a result, they are more effective at removing stains at lower wash temperatures starting at 20°C.

In contrast, Non Biological Washing Powders contain oxidising bleach. As a consequence, they require a higher wash temperature, at least 40°C in order to remove most stains.

To summarise, use a Biological Washing Powder if you want to wash textiles at lower temperatures.

Sensitive Skin

Use a Non Biological Washing Powder to wash garments worn by someone with sensitive skin. This is because they don’t contain enzymes, which may cause skin reactions.

Delicates

Always follow the care label instructions when washing any textile, in particular delicate fabrics such as woollens and silks.

The care label will tell you if the garment can be washed and if so at what temperature. Also, the care label may indicate that the textile is only suitable for hand washing.

Usually, delicates need to be washed at low temperatures starting at only 20°C. As a result use a Biological Washing Powder because it will be more effective at cleaning garments at low temperatures.

Colours

Both Biological and Non Biological Washing Powders are safe to use on colours.

Non Bio Powders contain oxidising bleach to remove stains. Oxidising bleach does not cause colours to run but over many washes may cause colours to gradually fade. Also known as a greying effect on clothes.

Therefore, use a Biological Washing Powder to get vibrant colours in your laundry. This is because they rely on enzymes rather than oxidising bleach to clean garments.

In addition, Biological Washing Powders are more effective at cleaning at lower temperatures which creates less wear and tear on textiles, especially coloured items.

Whites

To wash whites use a Biological or Non-Biological Washing Powder. Both are effective at cleaning whites.

Use a Biological Washing Powder for white clothes and textiles where the care label recommends a maximum wash temperature of up to 40°C.

This is because Biological Powders are more effective at removing stains at lower temperature.

Also, use a Biological Powder with a built in Optical Brightener for best results on loads of only whites. An Optical Brightener restores garments and textiles to a lovely bright white once again!

Use a Non Biological Washing Powder to wash whites where the care label recommends a wash temperature of 60°C or higher. For example, white cotton linen such as table clothes, napkins or bed linen.

This is because the oxidising bleach in Non Biological Powders is very effective at removing even stubborn stains in hot washes of 60°C and higher. As a result, it will leave even heavily stained whites clean and a perfect  bright white once again.

To Hand Wash garments use a washing powder that is effective at low temperatures starting at 20°C.

Biological Washing Powders formulated with enzymes are effective at washing textiles at hand wash temperature.

In contrast, Non Biological Washing Powders require a hotter wash temperature to remove stains. Usually they are effective from 30°C or 40°C.

Only use a washing powder specially formulated to wash delicate textiles such as woollens.

Most washing powders are too aggressive to use on delicate textiles.

Non Biological Washing Powders contain a high level of oxidising bleach to remove stains, which can cause wear and tear on very delicate fabrics such as wool.

Even too many enzymes in Biological Washing Powders can cause damage to delicate fibres.

As a result only use a mild detergent, specially formulated and tested, to wash delicate fabrics. A mild detergent is designed with the right level of cleaning performance to deliver clean laundry without damaging delicate fibres.
